The vote: in summary

With plenty of stories filling our timelines and airwaves, here’s a quick recap of what happened to bring you up to date:

Democratic leaders in the US House of Representatives said they wouldn’t vote on a bipartisan infrastructure plan on Thursday as their leaders suggested after the progressives hesitated. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday evening that the House would postpone the vote on the pending infrastructure bill to the U.S. Congress, but added that most members of the House were committed to supporting the legislation.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the Biden administration was confident that the infrastructure bill and a more complicated spending measure for social spending and tackling climate change would soon be passed by Congress.

Earlier Thursday, US President Joe Biden presented a $ 1.75 trillion plan for climate action, preschool education and other social initiatives that he said united Democrats, but some members of his party quickly pushed him away.

Dozens of progressive Democrats in the House opposed to a quick vote on a $ 1 trillion infrastructure bill until agreement is reached on a bigger social spending bill, their leader said Thursday. Pelosi earlier today urged Democrats to vote Thursday to pass the infrastructure bill, giving Biden a legislative victory.

But Representative Pramila Jayapal, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said the group was expect more from Biden’s agenda be ready to move on.

Progressives have long said they will not vote for the infrastructure bill, which was passed by the Senate with bipartisan support in August, until details of the larger bill – which targeted formerly $ 3.5 trillion – be settled.

Democrats said the the vote on the temporary transport financing bill would be the chamber’s last vote of the week. (Reuters)
